Hi Jeff!

Uhm, yeah, maybe it's been proven; I haven't kept up on the research.

But I tell you what, you're right on about the Pinot Noir vs. Merlot thing, WTF is that all about? Stands to reason I suppose, but I think it's a case of doing what they think is iconoclastic just to appear non-cliche, which has become cliche now BTW (c.f. Sideways), so you can all stop doing it. Please.

I believe that the resveratrol found in red wine is clinically proven to promote cell health and thus longevity. But that comes from the grape and so you could get the same results from just drinking grape juice or better yet eating those dark red/purple grapes. And I totally agree that for the most part PN sucks, and it's always funny to me that the people who love it "hate" merlot.... what a crock.

Hi Scott - thank you for coming by and leaving your note. There are, and have been, changes afoot in the wine "industry", sadly, which has turned things on their head from my halcyon years of the late 80s and early 90s. It has meant the demise of the old regimes, but also the rise of the new. And yes, I've always been one to support the locals, not the behemoths. But when the moguls put out the best wine at an affordable price... Is not our California "new" 40 year wine experience nothing compared to, say, the 400 years of "modern" châteaux in Bordeaux?

To know Annette and Richard Rhodes as I do makes you a believer terrior as a manifestation of site and people. Your discription of Annette's reserve mirrors the lovely lady, family and their peacefull vineyard in the north end of Redwood Valley. I have had the honor of being their grower representative purchasing the wounderfull Road J Merlot block for RH phillips Toasted Head program for the past 10 years with the same results, always a standout in any lineup of the best.
Unfortunatly Richard and Annette along with their three children are a victim of their own success. No longer is it good enough to be undisputedly at the top of the quality piramid propelling non pedigreed wineries like RH Phillips in the Dunnigan Hills or Rosenbloom in Alemeda into the lime light with double didgit sales growth. Once the corporate juggernaut takes notice of those kind of numbers its aquisityion time. Constellation with RH Phillips and Dieago with Rosenbloom. It only takes 2 years for corporate insanity to show itself in the way of abandonded relationships between grower and winemaker. I pray the Rhodes home does not go the way of the RH Phillips winnery or the Rosenbloom winery gutted and shuttered. It is unfortunate that the wouinderfull family farms of Mendocino County have to endure this lunacy. You mentioned Ravenswood. The Mendocino county zin would fly off the shelf yet as soon as Constellation aquired Ravenswood the decision was made to drop the brand to concetrate on the more recognizabe names of Napa and Sonoma leaving growers with the memory of being the "best" with no contract. Ironic the county that started the sustainable agriculture movement slowly dies by the same companies that use the term for marketing pourposes. Support family farms and wineries. Thanks

OMG! This is possibly the biggest surprise I've had with a wine in lo' these many months. This red is complex, balanced, lush and chock full of dark brooding fruit. The acids and tannins are just right and I detected no unpleasant herbaceousness at all. From nose to finish an absolutely wonderful wine... yielding, rich and not at all austere. Quite simply it's what every Napa cab should aspire to be. To quote the label, I'll "remember the magic" for a long time.

Hosting the Bad Man here at the Eastern chapter was a blast for sure!

Bad Man generously provided many wines from near and far and we enjoyed the HELL out of the nightly tastings! Much was drank, much was learned, fists flew, tears fell, stemware collided, villages pillaged, countries fell, and fun was had by all!

One theme was certainly the LB/RB war - and it provided a little-needed-excuse to buy and consume much Bordeaux! "Left Bank vs. Right Bank" or "Cab Sauv. vs. Merlot" - these are the details often glossed over in a drunken throw-down of the proverbial glove... But as Bad Man says, all is good in...a wine tasting war!

And as the dust settled, this Chateau Moulinat was certainly left standing as an outstanding Bordeaux no matter which side of the fence you stand!

Bad Man's review covered most of what I thought as well - though I did detect a bit of green veggies (which *I* actually enjoy) upon tasting, as well as some hairspray (which I don't enjoy!). Also I might add, the finish was soft and extended - impressive. My final score was an 87 - which handily beat out the 81 given to its contender, the Chateau d'Aiguilhe...

Thanks to Tally-Ho for her always-warm welcome - will definitely be hanging out here more often! We'll get a name for Hamakko GF and party on with you good people for as long as you'll have us!

Sounds like a great WOTM. Many thanks to our "Eastern" chapter for hosting this tasting. I love the description of the nose (especially the touch of fried egg) and wish we in the Bay Area had such great access to Old World Bordeaux at modest prices. Insert envy here.

On a side note, it was so much fun looking at the video footage of BadMan's visit and finally being able to put faces with names. And may I say how impressed I was with your wine notebooks. Very cool indeed! No campaigning is necessary- all we need is one more club name as you're both charter members in good standing.

All hail!
